Biodegradable or Compostable?

The terms "Biodegradable" and "Compostable" are often used loosely but have precise meanings.

With a growing focus on sustainability, brands are giving more attention to their environmental footprint. With bans on single-use plastics on the horizon, the use of biodegradable and compostable packaging is growing in popularity. While the terms “Biodegradable” and “Compostable” are often used in the same sentence, the meanings are different.

Biodegradable Materials

The definition of a biodegradable material is a material that will completely break down and return to the environment within a reasonably short period time after disposal. Typically, biodegradable packaging must break down completely, and decompose into natural elements within a year. Biodegradable materials help reduce waste buildup in landfill sites and contribute to a cleaner environment.

Compostable Materials

Compostable materials are similar to biodegradable materials, in that they return to the environment safely. Compostable materials, however, release nutrients into the earth as they break down, becoming usable compost. Compostable materials are designed to be added to home or industrial compost piles.

The speed at which biocompostables break down is dependent on several factors, including the material thickness, temperature and humidity – high temperatures reduce the time needed to compost.

Biodegradable and compostable materials are used extensively in food packaging, and more recently product packaging, such as beverages and healthcare. Our biodegradable and compostable labels are OK Compost certified along with the printing inks.
